(Translated PDF) Summary of The Ruling On Protests In Islām by Shaykh ‘Alī al-Ḥudhayfī al-‘Adanī - ‏حفظه الله -

Points of Benefit From The Lecture

  • The definition of protests/ demonstrations.

  • The affair of protesting originated from the Kuffār, unbelievers.

  • Protests and demonstrations are not permissible in al-Islām as they oppose the Book of Allāh and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allāh - ‏صلى الله عليه وسلم -.

  • The ʿUlamā' (scholars) of Sunnah are in agreement regarding the impermissibility of protests and demonstrations [scholars the likes of Shaykhs Ibn Bāz, al-Albānī, Ibn ʿUthaymīn, Muqbil al-Wādi'ī, al-Luḥaydān, Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān, and others]. There is no difference of opinion.

  • Those "scholars" who invite to protests care only about themselves, and will take any means to rebel against the rulers even if it will destabilise society.

  • Protests contain disobedience to Allāh.

  • The Companions and Tabi'īn never protested as a response to an oppressive leader.

  • Even in the lands of the Kuffār it is not permissible to protest, so how much in the lands of the Muslims?

  • Protests remove safety and security, and leads to the loss of lives and businesses.

  • Take a look at countries who turned to protests. Are they stable today? Look at Yemen, look at Libya.

  • Often in protests the goals and objectives of protesting are hardly achieved.

  • The Prophets were from the most patient of the people. The Messenger - ‏صلى الله عليه وسلم - remained in Makkah for 13 years and never once turned to protest.

  • We ask Allāh to bring prosperity, safety and security to our land, Nigeria.

And (remember) when Ibrâhîm (Abraham) said, "My Lord, make this city (Makkah) a place of security and provide its people with fruits, such of them as believe in Allâh and the Last Day." He (Allâh) answered: "As for him who disbelieves, I shall leave him in contentment for a while, then I shall compel him to the torment of the Fire, and worst indeed is that destination!"

    [al-Baqarah: 126 + Dr. Khān & Sh. al-Hilālī Translation]
