Should One Remain Silent In The Presence of Innovation

Al-Marrūdhī - رحمه الله - said:

“I said to Abū ʿAbdillāh [i.e., al-Imām Aḥmad], ‘Do you hold that a man should preoccupy himself with fasting and prayer, and keep silent about the people of innovations?’ He frowned and said, ‘If he fasts, prays, and abstains from the people, is [the benefit of] that not solely for himself?’ I said, ‘Of course!’ He said, ‘However, if he speaks [against the people of innovations] it is for him and others. So speaking is better.’”¹
